Friday : Canada - Ottawa and Niagara by the LakeThe first leg of our trip to various parts of Canada was the long, 8 hour drive up to Ottawa on Friday, Jan 15th. This *could* have been hellacious with blizzards and ice and nasty weather. We were quite fortunate! The weather was absolutely gorgeous, blue skies, reasonably cold.
We knew the trip would be about 8 to 9 hours. We live in Massachusetts so it involved going out on the Pike through into New York, then turning north at Syracuse and heading up through Fort Drum and Watertown, then across the border.
I really wanted to see the northern lights but it was overcast once we got north, and it stayed that way during our whole trip. Oh well! Interestingly, the clouds were very low and they created all sorts of odd light patterns once night fell. The various small towns had so much incidental light in them that they created stripes and bands of color in the sky. It was pretty - but also a bit disturbing. We shouldn't be "wasting" so much light and electricity in lighting up the clouds.
I tried to take photos of these color bands.
As we appraoched the border there were big signs supposedly telling us where to go - but they were not helpful at this crossing. The signs were mostly about where trucks should go and didn't tell normal cars what to do. We somehow ended up in a "truck lane". There was pretty much no traffic though - this was about 9pm on a Friday evening - so we went right through in about 2 minutes. They looked at our passports and asked us a few simple questions about where we were from and where we were going.
Interestingly, we said we were going to a wedding and then they asked if we were bringing any gifts or presents into the country. We said no. He didn't blink an eye! But it was true - my present was going to be origami cash and I was waiting to get Canadian bills once we got into Canada. So we literally had no presents on us.
There was a long, very steep bridge which doesn't show up well in the photo :)
The ride was entirely uneventful, and once in Ottawa, it was easy enough to find our hotel. It was the Best Western - Victoria Park. The parking lot is TINY beneath the hotel, it's good to have a small car when trying to navigate in here. We checked in, found our room, which was large and lovely, and promptly fell asleep!
